I got yer Deep Throat right here!
So, now we know. Still, I never heard of this guy!
Time for the weekly meme from The Music Memoirs!1. List three songs with the word America or American in them. The American In Me - Steve ForbertBorn In The USA - Bruce SpringsteenAmerican Pie - Don McLeanRunners Up: American Tune - Simon & Garfunkel,; Miss America - Styx; Kids In America - Kim Wilde; America - Paul Simon2. List three influential American songwriters.Well, I'm sticking with good old rock and roll here!Bob DylanCarole KingPaul SimonONLY 3? No way. Tom Waits, John Hiatt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Springsteen, Cynthia Weil, Laura Nyro,
As I flipped through the cable channels yesterday morning, I stopped at VH1 when I heard voices that sounded a bit like The Dixie Chicks, only more rockin'. I caught the tail end of the story, about their debut cd being released exclusively at Starbucks, heard the name "Antigone Rising," and sped to the computer to check them out before I could forget the name. (see Artist Of The Day, below.) No chance of forgetting it now. I picked up their cd, From The Ground Up, at my local Starbucks today! After listening to the first half of the cd, I'm sure these ladies are going to take the world by storm. Lead vocals by Cassidy are powerful, strong, and passionate, and the harmonizing (and guitar playing) by sisters Kristen and Cathy Henderson is sweet perfection. Dena Tauriello (drums) and Jen Zielanbach (bass) round out the band and give this band that solid-rock sound, even though the vocals have a twangy flavor. If you care to sample, I have two downloads for you, the first two songs on the cd.HelloWaiting, Watching, Wishing (cover of a Push Stars song)

Antigone Rising
Ok, so I'm late to the show here, since this band has already been featured on Today, played the Lilith Fair and recently had its cd released at Starbucks. I never heard of 'em until this morning, when I caught a snippet about the Starbucks release on VH1. I found their web site, listened to the clips, and was smitten!
Listen for yourself here. (no mp3's available there, though!) Maybe if I get out to Starbucks today, I'll have one here....tee hee.
Memorial Day
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
John McCrae, 1915

I never realized he was this cute! MTV, part of the Viacom corporate family, doesn't mind offending the guy in the White House with its skin show, Spring Break 2005, but they certainly don't want Trent Reznor to sing an offensive protest song with all of those Hollywood people in their MTV Movie Award audience. Trent, why can't you just sing something light and fun, like your classic Head Like A Hole? Come on, play along like a good boy! (click post title to read the story.)
You Know You're Old...
...when some DJ on your favorite station is chatting about one of your all time favorite bands and noting that "the surviving members" are possibly getting together for a tour. (She was talking about The Who.) Surviving members? Sounds like something you'd say about a bunch of WWII vets, doesn't it? Significant Other and I were listening to this in the car and lamenting our age. Instantly, I thought it would be cool if the surviving members of The Who formed a band with the surviving members of The Beatles and toured as The Who-tles (cuz The Bho just doesn't have a ring to it.) Eh? Ya think? They could perform some monster- mashed songs like: Baba O'Rigby, I Wanna Hold Your Squeezebox, Won't Get Back Again, and Strawberry Fields Are Alright. Whaddya think?
Ladies and Gentlemen: The Who-tles! (OK, so it's a really bad job using MS Paint! I don't have Photoshop!)

Finally, there's something at McDonald's I can enjoy for a breakfast or lunch without feeling guilty. Sure, the radio ads are STA-UPID, but hey, it's McDonald's for goodness sake. They have Ronald McDonald as a spokesperson. I have eaten this new Fruit & Walnut Salad twice, and I still can't figure out why they give you a knife and a fork to eat it with! The salad consists of sliced red and green apples, red grapes, and a small container of lowfat vanilla yogurt. They give you a small bag of scrumptious candied walnuts to throw into the fruit, too. I admit that I'm confused about the yogurt. Is the yogurt a dressing? If so, you can't just dump it over the fruit in a big blob, can you? That's not very attractive. Since you're given a knife and fork, it seems you're expected to eat this with utensils. So, are you to spear the fruit with the fork, then dip the chosen piece into the yogurt, then eat? I NEED INSTRUCTIONS, McDonald's people! I said to hell with it and ate the fruit with my fingers, dipping each piece into the yogurt first. I ate the nuts separately as my dessert. Miss Manners isn't watching me, and you won't tell her, will you?
10 Things I've Never Done
Paula tagged me with the 10 Things You've Never Done Meme.
I've never...
- Eaten escargot. (Nor will I ever! )
- Joined the "Mile High" club.
- Bungee jumped.
- Even wanted to bungee jump.
- Been pierced in any place but my ear lobe.
- Been attentive to the homily at Mass. (my bad, but I have a short attention span.)
- Found a hobby that I could stick with for life. (again, short attention span.)
- Enjoyed speaking in public.
- Had a tattoo.
- Ridden a carnival ride that goes in circles without getting sick.
Tag (no tag backs!): Shoehound, Janet , and Gilda.
The John Butler Trio This band from Oz (American born Butler moved to Australia when he was 11)plays music in the vein of Jack Johnson or Dave Matthews. Top 5 albums released in the last 5 years*This one's a toughie, since I play so much music so often and love so much of it! These are in no particular order.
 - Warren Zevon - The Wind - This may be a sentimental choice, but Warren managed to stay true to himself and write excellent songs for his final recording. RIP, Warren.
- Wilco - A Ghost Is Born/Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - I could not pick either one of these over the other; so, sue me. Both of them are OUT THERE (what's with the feedback, Tweedy?), but truly great.
- Neil Finn - One All/The Finn Brothers - Everyone Is Here - Sue me again. I can't choose. Both excellent!
- Bruce Springsteen - The Rising - As much as I love Devils & Dust, The Rising is so emotionally charged, and hey, the E Street Band makes up the difference.
- Patty Griffin - 1,000 Kisses - This woman's voice is angelic, and her songwriting is at its peak here. Click here to download Rain from this album.
Runners Up: Josh Rouse - 1972; The Flaming Lips -Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots; Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker, Hem - Eveningland; The Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music; Edie Carey - When I Was Made; Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head *This, of course, is all subject to change, with time.
On The Record
Hungry For A Good ThingThe Spirit of '67 - Paul Revere & The Raiders Released: 1966 Purchased: Well, technically my dad bought this in 1966, but I "borrowed" it from his collection in 1998.
Album Rating: 3 1/2 Stars Cover Art: 2 Stars
Tidbits: The album peaked at #9 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1967. Charted singles: Good Thing, Hungry, and The Great Airplane Strike. Produced and partially co-written by the recently deceased Terry Melcher (son of Doris Day.) Band members: Paul Revere, Mark Lindsay (the cute one,) Phil Volk, Jim Valley, and Michael Smith.
Back in '66, Elvis was The King (but of the B-movies,) The Mamas & The Papas introduced their folky harmonies, and every other American pop band wanted to be the next Beatles. How ironic is it that these 5 fresh-faced American boys donned the red coats during the slowly fading British Invasion? Were they paying homage or simply kissing off the trend?
Here's the thing: I have not heard this entire record since before the Beatles broke up. Even though I still own a turntable, it is wrapped in moving paper and taking up space on a basement shelf, just like old Christmas ornaments. (Perhaps I should hook it back up and sample the analog sounds emitting from the grooves in the vinyl?) How can I give this little gem the proper review? I did download 2 songs from iTunes, though.
Here's what saves me: like most 60's rock/pop records, there are some hits scattered around sides one and two, and the rest of the songs are simply filler. Throwaway songs. On this record, while you have the fantastic Beach Boys-like Good Thing, you also have the rather boring In My Community. Spirit of '67 includes amazingly little filler, so there are plenty of catchy, jangly, R & B-soaked pop songs to keep those American Bandstand kids "giving it an 88." It's one of the rock 'n roll records my dad played repeatedly, so if I plopped it on the turntable and took it for a spin, I'd probably remember every song! The good songs: Good Thing, Louise, Why? Why? Why?, Hungry, 1001 Arabian Nights, and The Great Airplane Strike.
About that cover: Although the guys are cute, you can barely delineate their shoulders from the background, so they look a bit like floating heads with fluffy white tails. Slightly disturbing. And the boys are sporting that sixties Colonial-look, wouldn't you say? (Do you think they're wearing Seinfeld's puffy shirt under the red coat?) What's with the airplane overhead? Does it signify a take-off in their career? Are they heading into the wild red yonder? I want answers, dammit. Overall, it looks like it was slapped together by some design-school dropout.
Click here to download an mp3 of Good Thing by Paul Revere & The Raiders. Put on the white go-go boots, gals, and dance like a Hullabaloo dancer!

Son Volt Though they became also-rans to Wilco in the post-Uncle Tupelo breakup band game, Son Volt is by no means a talentless and second-rate gig. Led by guitarist/songwriter Jay Farrar, Son Volt carried on in the tradition of Uncle Tupelo, staying true to the alt.country sounds with traditional instrumentation. (Wilco, in contrast, began experimenting with a distinctly different pop groove, adding trumpets, synthesizers, and even a vibraphone.)
Click here to download Flow from Son Volt's Wide Swing Tremelo. And look for a best of cd to be released next week.

It's all about the MTV this week!
Who are the first MTV VJs that you can remember? I remember when MTV was a show called Pop Clips on Nickelodeon. There weren't that many videos to show, so they repeated the same ones over and over. Betty Davis Eyes. Whip It. Video Killed the Radio Star. Nesmith's Rio. Did you know that this was former Monkee Mike Nesmith's baby? Yep. His mom invented Liquid Paper, and he invented MTV!
Martha Quinn (she was so perky!) Nina Blackwood (that scratchy voice and that wild hair!) Mark Goodman (all those curls) Alan Hunter (CUTE CUTE CUTE!) JJ Jackson (knew his stuff and was a big teddy bear...RIP JJ)
Name 3 tv shows that aired on Mtv. (were any of them actually music related?)
Remote Control (funny!) The Tom Green Show(Funnier!) Beavis And Butthead (Funniest!)
What bands do you think would be nothing without Mtv?
All of those 80's hair bands! Metallica Bon Jovi Foo Fighters Need I go on? There are too many to name!
Bonus:
What is your favorite music video? All time favorite is Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Close runner ups are Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Van Halen's Jump, and A-ha's Take On Me.
10 songs that sum up your weekend (or were on your weekend playlist)and one picture that relates back. - Rain - Patty Griffin - And it looks like it's going to be the weather theme for the entire week up here!
- One Line Epitaph - The Navigators - Heard this one about 5 times over the weekend.
- Save Me - Aimee Mann - From the Radio Arethusa show I listened to on Sat. night.
- F*** Her Gently - Tenacious D - From the Radio Darth show I listened to immediately following Radio Arethusa!
- Kathleen - Josh Ritter - Darth played this one for me.
- The Trouble With Trouble - Trish Murphy - I started devising a playlist for a possible Radio Nat show and this one of my choices.
- No Mermaid - Sinead Lohan - Also on tap for Radio Nat.
- Dirty Laundry - Don Henley - What I did all day yesterday.
- Cold Day - Sonya Kitchell - I ripped a few cds over the weekend. This Sonya Kitchell EP was one of them.
- When Will You Come Back Home - Ryan Adams - another cd I ripped. And our older son came home over the weekend again!
I know I mentioned this album in a what's new this week post, but in case you're a Ryan Adams fan and you haven't picked up Cold Roses, please do yourself a favor and buy it already! You can preview it here (streaming), but it's definitely worth adding to your collection. It's more Whiskeytown-Ryan Adams than it is Love Is Hell-Ryan Adams, so if that's your taste, give it a listen. I'm in love with that alt.country sound all over again!

Waiting for the Car Man Blues
I hate going to see the "Car Man." Now, if that sounds like I'm whining, well, so be it. Really, I'm not. Even a 20-minute wait is a crummy waste of 20 minutes, and you have to sit there with that stupid candy machine filled with old pistachios and M & M's staring at you. The TV usually has spotty reception and it's always turned to CNN. No matter how much hominess they try to portray with their fake plants and Brent Heighton prints, the waiting area is fraught with the stale odors of oil, grease, and car exhaust. There are never enough seats, some kid is usually running around or crying or kicking his little sister, and the coffee is unfit for consumption! (Well, maybe I AM whining!) Today's wait, though it stretched a 20-minute oil-change into an 75 minutes, wasn't so bad after all. Why? Because the television was tuned to MTV and I found myself actually watching their show, Next. If you're not familiar with this one, it's one of those reality shows that only MTV can get away with. I'll use MTV's own description here: Ever wish you could bail in the middle of a bad date? Well, NEXT is the new MTV show that lets you do just that. We'll set you up on 5 dates. The minute you get annoyed, angry or just plain bored, simply kick 'em to the curb by saying "NEXT", and start over with someone new. Don't feel too bad for the ones you give the boot. They'll get cash for every minute they last and the one who makes it to the end gets a chance to turn the tables. They can choose to go on a second date with you or take the money and run. So be careful what you do, because sooner or later you could be the one hearing the word "NEXT." The "dater" stands next to a bus where the 5 dates await their turns to impress him/her, and describes him/herself and what they are looking for in a successful date. What a BUNCH of self-centered asswipes. I was hooked, if only for the WTF? factor! Next, you have a short segment featuring each of the 5 dates, just so you can get to know them and get either all warm and fuzzy or totally disgusted by their inflated egos. Again....LOSERS!!! In one segment, the Dater was a well-muscled 20-year-old sporting a large tatoo (taking up the entire shoulder, upper arm, and chest on one side of his body.) He "Nexted" the first girl because she wasn't " a fit girl," and moved on to the next cutie. I have to hand it to her, she lasted through 24 minutes of his "charms", but balked when he did his "Chippendale dancer" moves on her lap. When she told him that she would not make out on the first date, he booted her. (And this was after he proclaimed that Chippendales were not exotic dancers.) She walked away with 24 whole bucks for her effort (or lack of it.) I was both captivated and repulsed by all of these airhead participants.Made the 75 minutes of inhaling those disgusting waiting area fumes almost bearable! NEXT!
Top Five Songs with "Places" in the Title

- Memphis In The Meantime - John Hiatt - Let the toe tappin' commence. Hiatt assembled quite the backing band for his album, Bring The Family, with Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder, and Jim Keltner giving Memphis a real R & B treatment. Hiatt's vocal is raw, gritty, and emotive. (Does it sound like I'm a Hiatt fan or what?)
- Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin - Heaven's a place, isn't it?
- London Calling - The Clash - Those pounding, thrashing guitars. That raspy, fevered vocal. This is my favorite Clash song. (Am I the only idiot out there playing air drums to this one and screaming out , I live by the river?) Click here* to download.
- California Girls - The Beach Boys - Even though I'm an east coast girl, I never wore the hips styles. Did I keep my boyfriend warm at night with my kisses? I just wish I'd grown up with the sunshine and the tan.
- Ohio - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Released only a week after the tragic killings of 4 Kent State students 35 years ago, this angry outcry summed up the entire late 60's anti-war movement and the anti-Nixon sentiment.
Runners Up: New York, New York - Ryan Adams; Carolina In My Mind - James Taylor; Going Down To Liverpool - Katrina & The Waves; Private Idaho - The B-52's; Don't Go Back To Rockville - REM; Hollywood Nights - Bob Seger, Nevada, California* - The Jayhawks; Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon; Thibodaux, Louisiana - Marcia Ball; Hackensack - Fountains of Wayne. *download available for 7 days only
Today's Mix CD
Power Pop/Jangle Pop Mix!
Alison Brown There must be something about the name "Alison" and the ability to play bluegrass music, eh? In 1989 Alison Krauss invited Alison Brown to join her band, Union Station. Ms. Brown left her other Alison to pursue her own musical endeavors, including a stint as Michelle Shocked's musical director. She owns a Grammy, too, for a duet with fellow banjoist Bela Fleck (Best Country Instrumental, in 2000).

On The Record
Hello, It's Todd Something/Anything? - Todd Rundgren
Released: 1972 Purchased: 1974
Album Rating: 5 Stars Cover Art: 3 1/2 Stars
Tidbits: Something/Anything reached #29 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart in 1974. Three singles charted: Couldn't I Just Tell You at #93 (1972), I Saw The Light(1972)at #16, and Hello It's Me at #5 (1973.) Album produced and arranged by Rundgren. Appearing on the side 4: Rick Derringer, Randy and Mike Brecker, Rick Vito, Jim Horn, Edward Olmos (yeah, the ACTOR!), and Vicki Robinson (future diva of Turn The Beat Around!) Sides 1,2, and 3 are completely Todd's vocals and instrumentation. It's #173 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
You can't have an intelligent discussion about 70's pop without a mention of one of its masters: the eclectic genius, Todd Rundgren. This one-man double album is de rigueur | |
