Thursday Thirteen
13 of My Favorite TV Characters
 13. Reverend Jim Ignatowski- Taxi - Played by Christopher Lloyd - Reverend Jim seemed to have burned out more than a few brain cells in the 60's, but he was always full of surprises. Great quote: The ability to witness two men stand toe to toe in the spirit of sportsmanship and pummel each other into insensibility is what separates us from the animals.
 12. Deputy Barney Fife - The Andy Griffith Show - Played by Don Knotts - I think it's a tribute to this beloved character that every part Knotts played after this, including Mr. Furley on Three's Company, was basically Barney Fife in different clothing. Great quote: It's a wise man who knows not to push the limits of the law. (Can't you just hear him saying this?)
 11. Dr. Mark Greene - ER - Played by Anthony Edwards - The thoughtful, loyal doc who always seemed to keep it real. I still remember feeling shaken after the episode when Dr. Greene flubbed a birth in the ER and lost the mother. So well done that it seemed entirely real. Great quote: Hey Jerry, don't we have a 'Lost and now is ours' box?
 10. Captain Malcom "Mal" Reynolds - Firefly - Played by Nathan Fillion - Nobody could kick a&& and take names like Mal Reynolds. This fierce warrior-turned-ship's captain was always getting his butt kicked, rebounding, and coming back for more. Great quote: Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainlycoming to a middle. (he had lines like this numerous times in every episode. ) 9. Nurse Colleen McMurphy - China Beach - Played by Dana Delany - A woman who loved her job, but hated the circumstances. McMurphy often went overboard to show her coworkers and their patients just how much she cared. Great quote: Sex is a bad word, but it feels good. Love is a good word, but it hurts.
 8. Hoss Cartwright - Bonanza - Played by Dan Blocker - Big, warm-hearted Hoss was often the comic relief in this weekly western. When Dan Blocker passed away and they wrote Hoss's passing into the show, it was the first time I can recall being sad over something on tv. Great quote: Pa, I'm powerful hungry! I ain't had but a couple or three breakfasts since mornin'.
 7. Rhoda Morgenstern - The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Played by Valerie Harper. - This sassy, insecure, overweight Jewish lady had many of the good lines on the show. One of my favorites: I don't know why I should even bother to eat this. I should just apply it directly to my hips.
 6. Jack Bauer - 24 - Played by Keifer Sutherland - Do not mess with Jack Bauer. All you need to know is that he works for CTU and he'll kill you if he has to. Great quote: If you don't tell me what I want to know, then it'll just be a question of how much you want it to hurt.
 5. Jim Rockford - The Rockford Files - Played by James Garner - Brash, sly, handsome, and professional. The quintessential detective! Great quote: Rockford: [to hood who has just kidnapped him] Does your mother know what you do for a living?
4. Lorelai Gilmore - Gilmore Girls - Played by Lauren Graham - Smart, sassy, caffeine-addicted, quirky, flawed, and independent. I love Lorelai (but not that she dumped Luke!) Great quote: Mom, it's just a pretend wedding. J-Lo has them all the time.
 3. All the characters of Gilda Radner - Saturday Night Live - I can't pick just one. This woman made me laugh like no other (even more than Lucy!) Great Quote: It's always something!
 2. Maggie O'Connell - Northern Exposure - Played by Janine Turner - Feisty Maggie will always be my heroine. She was independent, smart, and unafraid to speak her mind. She felt cursed, though, when a succession of guys she dated died. Great quote: I am not a hooker. Jerk. I'm your landlord. 1. Captain James T. Kirk - Star Trek - Played by William Shatner - Yes, the overacting puts him on top here. What fun to watch Kirk and all of his antics with green women, various red-suited yeowomen, and his constant give-and-take with Mr. Spock. Great quote: Spock, the women on your planet are logical. No other planet in the galaxy can make that claim. Get the Thursday Thirteen code here! View More Thursday Thirteen Participants
Artist And Song Of The Day
Mindy SmithMindy's new album, Long Island Shores, will be out on October 10. Until then, have a listen to her new song, Out Loud, and let her angelic vocal wash over your stressed out self. (C'mon now. Who is stressed?) Listen in the left sidebar (the podcast thingie) or over here.
Tell It To Me Tuesday
 Janet wants to know.....
What are some of your favorite smells and is there a reason attached to why you like them so much? And in a two parter, what smells can't you stand and why? (try not to pick the obvious ones we all can agree upon here, k?)
Of course, since I've been following the Weight Watchers program for over a year, food aromas have been my favorite scents! Tops: brownies baking, onions and peppers cooking in olive oil, and hamburgers on the grill. Other favorites include Yankee Candle's Christmas Cookie and Sage & Citrus, gardenias in bloom, and my Clinque Happy cologne. What can't I stand? Over-perfumed ladies at church, the overpowering scents that assault you when you walk into a Yankee Candle store, Clorox, ammonia, and mulch. I hate spreading mulch because I cannot stand the smell of it (any type!)Now tell me yours!
Take Me Back Tuesday
Names. Three songs. Three artists. (oh come on now, this one's a gimme!) Three albums. Oh, it's the Name Game!Songs:Alison - Elvis CostelloProud Mary - Creedence Clearwater RevivalJulia - The BeatlesArtists:Yes, they all have names! ;) Ok, I'll just name three favorites:Patty GriffinBruce SpringsteenNeil YoungAlbums:Who The Hell Is John Eddie? - John EddieGordon - Barenaked LadiesA Girl Called Eddy - A Girl Called Eddy
Monday Podcast - The 80's That Didn't Suck
To anyone who says, The 80's sucked! when it comes to music, I reply with an emphatic, BULLCRAP! You just have to do a little research and look beyond the hair bands, the synthesized pop schlock, and the overblown mainstream stuff. (But there was good stuff, even in the mainstream, too.) Here Comes Your Man - PixiesCan't Get There From Here - R.E.M.Teen Age Riot - Sonic YouthAll In My Mind - Love And RocketsBastards Of Young - The ReplacementsListen at left, or download it here.
Psychedelic Sunday
The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven - The Black AngelsNobody said that psychedelia stopped precisely at midnight on Dec. 31, 1969. Rock bands have continued to freak us out with trippy sounds; we just tend to look the other way. Take The Black Angels, a neo-psych band out of fertile music ground in Austin, TX. Have a listen in the left sidebar to their Doors-channeling song, The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven. You tell me if psychedelia is a thing of the past. Heck, even the title sounds like something out of the sixties, don't you think? Just to be safe, I'm leaving my love beads and my peace sign flag buried in the bottom of my junk drawer.Download it here, if you like.

Thursday Thirteen
Thirteen Things That Are Dumb, Stupid, Or Ugly
Lately, I've been thinking there are a lot of stupid things out there! And ugly? Plenty of that, too! Dumb? Well, you be the judge.
 13. Tampon Dispenser - Yes ladies, to beautify your bathroom and hide those unsightly tubes of cotton and polyester, there is this decorative dispenser! (Verdict: Stupid and Ugly!)
12. Crocs - Practical? Yes. Comfy? Most certainly. Good looking on feet? No way! (Verdict: Ugly, unless you're wearing them at the beach or in a medical facility with scrubs. Really ugly in orange on Mario Batali.) 11. Ed, Edd, and Eddy - This cartoon, from The Cartoon Network, is the worst-drawn thing I've ever seen. Kids love it, but the humor is quite crude, and the animation is sub-par, if you ask me. (Verdict: The Trifecta of Stupid, Dumb, and Ugly!)10. Spamradio - If having your email inbox stuffed with spam every stinking day is not enough for you, you can click here and listen to spam streamed right to your speakers! The voice is some annoying robotic thing, too, just to enhance the whole experience. (Verdict: DUMB!)9. Stuff On My Cat - I was checking out the new paperback table and work and found the latest website-to-book offering (following the lead of Post Secret,) Stuff On My Cat. Some are cute. Most are just STUPID. (Verdict: Stupid. Hey, I'm not a cat fancier! And I would not blame any one of the cats for scratching the eyes out of their owners. I mean, look at this poor thing.) The website is here. I'm holding out for Stuff On My Ex-Boyfriend or Stuff In My Kid's Diaper. 8. Gene Simmons - I saw about 3 minutes of his show Gene Simmons Family Jewels on A & E. I thought nothing could be worse than The Osbornes. Boy, was I wrong. (Verdict: Gene Simmons: Ugly. Gene Simmons Family Jewels: Dumb.) 7. Donald Trump - Do I really need to explain? (Verdict: BUTT UGLY!)6. Anybody who pays 9 or 10 bucks to go see Jackass 2. (Verdict: Stupid!) 5. Politicians who leave messages on my machine, asking for my vote. - I don't appreciate phone spam. I'm not voting for you, even if I had planned to. (Verdict: Stupid, with a side of annoying.) 4. Nip/Tuck, Season 4 - The season, so far, is trying too hard keep that razor-sharp edge it's become known for. The producers seem to think that all they need to maintain that edge is plenty of naked man butt. In this week's episode, I counted 3 shots of naked man butt, including that of Mario Lopez. I appreciate a nice naked man butt, really I do. But let's have some interesting story lines, too, ok? The major plot line this season? Sean and Julia are having a baby with ectrodactyly. Of course, having highly skilled plastic surgeons in the family is just a stroke of luck for this baby! Kimber's back and attempting to convert Matt to Scientology (gasp!). (Verdict: Dumb)

3. Kid Rock - I'm sorry, this is a no-brainer. (Verdict: Ugga Lee!) 2. Spain Bans Too-Skinny Models - While I agree in principle, to think that the girls of the runway are just going to start eating more than a stick of celery and a rice cake just to keep their jobs is idiotic. And what about those naturally skinny women? (Verdict: Stupid!) 1. Ahmadinejad's U.N. Speech - He said, "Would it not be easier for global powers to ensure their longevity and win hearts and minds through the championing of real promotion of justice, compassion and peace, than through continuing the proliferation of nuclear and chemical weapons and the threat of their use?" OHHHH, I see. His own country's development of nuclear weapons must be to promote justice, compassion, and peace. That's different! Does he think we are all stupid? (Verdict: World Class Stupid!) Artist And Song Of The Day
Charlotte MartinShe's a singer/songwriter and a pianist from Illinois, who made some noise in 2004 with On Your Shore. Think "a kinder, gentler Fiona Apple." Click here to download Stromata, from her new album, Stromata.
And now, for the second meme of the day....Do you like listening to the radio? why or why not? Heck, yeah, but the stations I like to listen to have dwindled to 2. I like me some internet radio, Rismixlive or Radio Paradise. And I like some podcasts, too! How many songs can you remember that are about the radio or mention radio in the lyrics or title? AM Radio - Everclear FM - Steely Dan
Do you have any memories associated with the radio? Yep. Listening to the college radio station from Franklin & Marshall College is where I first heard Bowie. And Ohio State's college station is where I discovered R.E.M. in the early 80's. I also remember when I was a kid listening to WBZ (Boston) at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. Also listened to WOWO (Ft. Wayne IN) and WLS (Chicago.) I played with the radio instead of sleeping!
Have you ever called in a request to your favorite station? Of course! Bonus: If you could request a song right now what song would you pick? Bob Dylan's Someday Baby
The name of the game last week was obscure actors. It worked so well I thought why not keep the same theme, but extend it to music? So today's TITMT question is this... What are the best albums you believe most people have never heard? Oh Janet, you're after my heart with this question. You know, music freak that I am, that I must have a ton of albums to mention here, but I'll cut it down.
Say I Am You - The Weepies - Sure, I included them in my Top 5 recently (Songs That Should Be Hits,) but I feel the entire album is worth the plug. This album is packed with beautiful melodies, delicious vocals from Deb Talen, and delightful love songs. Click here* to download Take It From Me, from The Weepies Say I Am You.
Living Under June - Jann Arden - See, I'm a big lover of the beautiful female vocal. Living Under June is my favorite Arden disc, with great songs like Insensitive, Could I Be Your Girl, Good Mother, and Living Under June. Songwriting is top-notch. Click here* to download Insensitive from Jann Arden's Living Under June.

Slow Turning - John Hiatt - I have not plugged this guy enough lately, and he's one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I'm sure you've heard at least one of his songs at some point, covered by someone else. Hell, even Mandy Moore has covered one of his songs (Have A Little Faith In Me.) Not everyone seems to appreciate his vocals as much as I (and other Hiatt-heads) do, and I respect that. It's probably why he's never had a huge hit record and never will. OK by me. I get great seats at shows, and Hiatt always meets and greets with the fans, since there aren't all that many of us. Click here* to download Drive South, from John Hiatt's Slow Turning.
Great Central Revisited - Kimberley Rew - Former Soft Boy Kimberley Rew hit a home run with this record, released in 2002. He's crafted a fine pop/rocker here, along the lines of The Kinks mixed in with a little Nick Lowe. (You may know of Rew's 1985 hit song, Walking On Sunshine from Katrina & The Waves!) Click here* to download Life Itself from Kimberley Rew's Great Central Revisited. Got any I should know about? *Downloads available for 7 days only!

Shopping Woes
I went shopping today, since I'm in need of some new clothes to wear to work (they've instated a "no jeans" policy now, and that's just about all I had!) Jeans and pants have always been difficult for me, with ample hips, a small waist, and short legs. I'm used to that. What I'm not used to are the sweater sleeves practically dragging the ground. Where, oh where, are all of these women with freakishly long arms? Speak up. Where ARE YOU? You must be out there, since every sweater or top I tried on had the sleeves hanging well past my fingertips. The only way I found something was to buy a top advertised as "3/4 sleeve." The sleeve ends precisely at my wrist. Who are you Amazons? Are your legs also the models for most "average"-length pants?
Top Five Songs and/or Albums that Should Have Been "Hits"
Well, well. I am going with songs here, just because I have a ton of ideas!
5. Monday - Wilco - It's got everything it needed for a hit. Great boogie beat, catchy tune and hook, and a cool gruff vocal from Jeff Tweedy. This would have been a hit song in the 70's, though.
4. Through My Door - The Muckrakers - SHould have been a hit last year. It has a lovely harmony. 3. Sometimes A Pony Gets Depressed - Silver Jews - It's quirky, but I love the groove and the lyrics. It would fit right in on the Billboard's Modern Rock chart.
2. Gotta Have You - The Weepies - This should be on the charts RIGHT NOW people. What an excellent song.
1. Can't Hardly Wait - The Replacements - Another catchy tune that would have made it in the 70's am radio era. The Mats got such little chart respect in their day.Podcast is available in the left sidebar (press the little arrow button in the center of the podcast screen) or download it here.
In Tribute - YN2 Melissa Rose Barnes
Note: This post will remain at the top for the week of September 11. Petty Officer Second Class Melissa Rose Barnes, above, perished at the Pentagon five years ago today.
For the last several days, I have been trying to decide how to go about paying a tribute to Melissa. How could anything I write be anything more than trite, considering her sacrifice for her country?
Then it dawned on me. It's not about me and my writing; it's about her.
Let me tell you what I've learned about her through comments left at legacy.com and other such tribute sites.
According the the Los Angeles Times:Melissa Rose Barnes, 27, was preparing to leave the Pentagon soon to move back to California. She had worked at the Navy's headquarters for two years after holding several assignments since 1992, when she enlisted from Redlands. Her mother, who is divorced from her father, still lives in California. She also has a brother. Promoted to yeoman third class in June 2000, Barnes held an administrative job in telecommunications at the Pentagon and reported to the Chief of Naval Operations, according to a Navy spokesman. She stayed in touch with her former husband, Petty Officer 1st Class Chris Barnes of Chesapeake, Va. They separated in 1998 after four years of marriage. He kept one of their dogs, Sasha, and she kept the other, Honey. Barnes began her naval service as a corpsman--a medical aide--at a naval hospital in Portsmouth, Va., and later received communications training in Mississippi. In 1997, she left the Navy but returned about nine months later. "She missed the military," Chris Barnes said. "She wanted to try something else, but she came back into it."
She, according to several accounts, including a newspaper interview with her mother, loved the Navy. She must have been a kind, considerate coworker, since a tribute at legacy.com reads, "I still remember Melissa when she would come to my office everyday at the Pentagon to bring us cookies & candy." Another tribute there mentions that she was always fretting over her uniform's "squared away" appearance. She must have, indeed, been a conscientious sailor.
Each tribute at legacy.com that was written by someone who knew Melissa mentions how wonderful she was as a friend or a coworker. There is even a kind comment from a husband and wife who had been served by Melissa when she moonlighted as a waitress. Seems she left a good impression on everyone she met. Another frequent mention in the legacy.com comments is the band Queensryche. Melissa was, apparently, a fan. She died defending her country and our American freedoms, just like she promised to do when she raised her hand and enlisted. The way I see it, the best way we can pay tribute to Melissa's service to our country and to her ultimate sacrifice is to go out today and celebrate that American freedom: eat a hot dog, read a newspaper or a magazine, visit your place of worship and light a candle. Go for a jog in the park. Do something. And think of Melissa and the 2,995 others who lost their lives that day 5 years ago when you do. Make that your prayer.
Thursday Thirteen
I just read that Whitney's finally going to divorce that nasty Bobby Brown. Here are 13 other celebrity couples I wish would bust up, not that I'm advocating divorce on a grand scale....
13. Mr and Mrs. Dr. Phil - If only to stop the book-writing insanity. Dr Phil books. Dr. Phil's Son books. Dr. Phil's Wife books. It's NUTS!
12. Chris Knight & Adrianne Curry - If only to squash any future seasons of My Fair Brady: We're Having A Baby or something like that.
11. Those Two People Who Are Not Married Yet Whom I'm Not Gonna Mention By Name But They Have A Baby With The Most Hair I've Ever Seen On An Infant - Yeah, them. Oh wait. Maybe they should stay together. I wouldn't want to see that guy back on Oprah hopping on a sofa ever again.
10. Dubya and Laura - Just for the entertainment value.
9. Donald and Melania Trump - Another one just for entertainment.
8. Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock - They are not married yet, but they should just skip that part. Come on. You know they're just going to break up within a few months anyway!
7. Brad and Angelina - Same thing, except they might last longer as a couple. I'd give them few years, until someone even more stunning than Angelina comes along.
6. Jessica Simpson and John Mayer - Some say it's already over, and that she was "using" him to stay in the limelight. Yep, she knows her 15 minutes is ticking away. Please, let it be over.5. Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake - Justin's new album is out and it's going to have the bimbettes lining up to try to get to him. Will Cameron get fed up? Will I tire of seeing their picture on all the magazines at work? 4. Anyone else the press decides to "one word" like Vaughniston. It's just not really meant to be. 3. Halle Berry and that model guy - Stop the insanity. If two people who look that good get married and reproduce, I'm positive that global warming will speed up. 2. Kate Hudson And Chris Robinson - Time for her to dump the sleazeball. I know, it's already out that they are separating, but this one needs to be finalized! And hey, Owen Wilson is just waiting for it! 1. Tell Me Who You Want To See Break Up! (Besides, I don't want to invoke the Britney/Kevin thing by myself!)

Today, Janet wants to hear about the actors who are your favorite little known gems.
Let's see now...I guess that leaves out Orlando Bloom....
Alan Rickman - Everyone knows him as Snape from the Harry Potter series, but this guy has been around for quite awhile. Remember Die Hard? He was the bad guy, and oh, what a bad guy he can play! He's not exactly "little known," but he's quite unsung, if you ask me. Paul Ruud - Remember him from Friends? Always good. Joan Allen - Loved her in The Upside Of Anger. She's always giving a cool, understated performance.
This week, it's Latin or Latin-inspired music. This month's mixmania was meant to be "sad and scary" or whatever your reaction was to 9/11 in music. Some folks chose not to take up this challenge, and that's fine. We each have our own way of coping. I chose to participate, and here's my song list:Hellfire In The Holy Land - Michael McDermott - A precursor to the events. You know, I cannot remember a time in my 49 years when there has not been hellfire in the holyland. Very sad.Another Sunny Day - Belle And Sebastian - The way 9.11.01 started out: a fresh, bright, sunny day on the eastern seaboard.Far Away - Sleater-Kinney - "And the heart is hit in a city far away but it feels so close."Ashes To Ashes - Steve Earle - "That every tower ever built tumbles No matter how strong, no matter how tall. Someday even great walls will crumble and every idol ever raised falls."Let's Roll - Neil Young - He's taken heat for this song, but it strikes a nerve with me.Into The Fire - Bruce Springsteen - To the men and women who bravely venture into the unknown.Today - Innocence Mission - "Today, today his leaving makes me sad."Tuesday's Gone - Lynryd Skynryd - It was a Tuesday we can never forget.Goodbye - Patty Griffin - A song about saying goodbye to someone who has passed away.Rain - Patty Griffin - Another sad Patty Griffin song dealing with death. Like most folks, I was sad and shell-shocked for quite some time after 9/11.Angel - Sarah McLachlan - 2,996 souls in the arms of the angel. The Rising - Bruce Springsteen New York New York - Ryan Adams If I Had A Rocket Launcher - Bruce Cockburn - I'm angry now, and some sonofabitch would die. Lives In The Balance - Jackson Browne Where Do The Children Play? - Cat Stevens War - Jonatha Brooke War On War - Wilco In The News - Kris Kristofferson J.P.M.F.y.F. - Tim Easton - All the talk of blue states and red states leaves me feeling sick to my stomach. Protect me, indeed. Peacekeeper - Fleetwood Mac Comfortably Numb - Dar Williams - I think many of us are in this place. Comfortably numb.
